Get Ready, Get Set………Go to School!!

Wow!  The summer months have flown by and the beginning of school is just around the corner, in fact school begins Tuesday, September 5th, the day after Labor Day.  Parents are ready, the students, maybe not so much but, here are a few tips for helping parents and students get back into the “groove”:

  • Set up a regular bedtime and wake-up routine before school starts.
  • Keep a positive attitude toward learning, recall the fun and exciting events, such as field trips, projects and learning new things that school offers
  • Attend Back to School Night/Open House with your child. This provides the opportunity for your child to become familiar with their teacher, classroom and key places such as the bathroom, playground, library, and where they will eat snack and lunch, etc.  This helps to provide  comfort and confidence in your child so that their first day goes smoothly.
  • Purchase school supplies, let the children help you, but provide parameters
  • Throughout the school year help your child with homework and show him/her that you value what they are learning
  • Get involved in school events, this helps to connect the school and community and lets your child know that you are enthusiastic and supportive of their learning experience.
  • Read, read, read with your child, spend quality time together on a daily basis
  • Communicate with your child’s teacher on a regular basis, address any issues that may arise during the school year pertaining to your child’s emotional, social, or academic difficulties or successes.
  • Have a Back to School celebration in your home. Prepare a special treat for dinner, help your child pack their backpacks, pick out clothing for the first day of school, etc.
