Pre-K 4 Program

Preparing Your Child For Kindergarten And Beyond

At Resurrection Lutheran School, our Pre-K 4 program is designed to help children build the confidence, independence and foundational skills they need in order to successfully transition to kindergarten. We help our preschoolers prepare not only for their first day of kindergarten but also for a lifelong love of learning by taking a whole-child approach to development. In our Pre-K 4 program every day is filled with opportunities to explore, create, ask questions and solve problems alongside an evidence-based curriculum and a faith-led approach.

Building A Strong Foundation For Kindergarten

Our Pre-K 4 program combines structured learning with purposeful play to help children master the skills expected in kindergarten while allowing them to continue learning through exploration and discovery. Rather than focusing solely on academics, we believe kindergarten readiness also means helping children learn how to work with others, solve problems, communicate effectively, follow routines, and become confident learners.

Our Pre-K 4 students participate in our engaging curriculum that emphasizes:

  • Early reading and literacy
  • Language and communication
  • Beginning writing skills
  • Mathematics and number sense
  • Science
  • Creative arts
  • Critical thinking
  • Social emotional development
  • Independence.

Because every child develops differently, our teachers personalize instruction to meet each child where they are and encourage growth at an appropriate pace.

A Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP)

As a Virginia Quality program, Resurrection Lutheran School participates in the Virginia Kindergarten Readiness Program (VKRP) to help ensure every child is prepared for kindergarten.

VKRP allows our teachers to monitor each child’s progress in important developmental areas, including early literacy, mathematics, self-regulation and social development. VKRP helps our teachers better understand each child’s strengths and identify opportunities for additional support. The information gathered allows us to personalize instruction, celebrate developmental milestones, and prepare children for a smooth transition into kindergarten.

Virginia Language and Literacy Screening (VALLSS)

In addition to VKRP, eligible Pre-K 4 students participate in the Virginia Language and Literacy Screening System (VALLSS), which evaluates early language and literacy development.

These screenings help our teachers:

  • Monitor language development
  • Support early reading readiness
  • Identify children who may benefit from additional instruction
  • Personalize classroom learning experiences

A Typical Day In Our Pre-K 4 Program

Our daily schedule provides a healthy balance of structured learning, hands-on exploration, indoor and outdoor play and quiet time.

A typical day may include:

  • Morning provocation activities
  • Circle time and morning meeting
  • Choice centers and independent exploration
  • Small-group instruction
  • STREAMin³ learning
  • Storytime and early literacy
  • Science, math, art and creative activities
  • Outdoor play (minimum one hour day)
  • Lunch and snacks
  • Rest and quiet time
  • Afternoon STREAMin³ learning

Throughout the day, Christian values are naturally incorporated through prayer before meals, weekly chapel and Bible stories.
